Tips For swimmer’s ears

Swimmer's ear is an outer ear infection that develops when impure water sits in the ear for a expanded period of time. It is (also known as otitis externa) which causes pain and discomfort for swimmers of all ages.

It’s painful, it’s frustrating, and it can even keep you out of the water for a while. It's a common infection that can be prevented. But the condition is more common in the summer when people are often in the water and when it’s hot and humid. So – what should you do about it?

Here are some dos and don’ts for preventing swimmer’s ears:

A dry ear is unlikely to be infected, so it is important to keep the ears free of moisture during swimming or bathing. Use a bathing cap, Water Proof Ear Plugs, or custom-fitted swim molds when swimming to keep water out of your ears. However, they can also trap water in your ears, so be sure to dry your ears well after swimming even when you wear them.

Don’t just swim through the pain. Take a break from swimming. Many swimmers ignore their doctor’s instructions to stay out of the pool (anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks) and end up fine. But being exposed to pool water when your ear is already irritated can prolong the infection and/or make it worse.

Be careful when cleaning your ears. Most doctors advise against using cotton swabs unless you're using it to clean the outside of the ear. Instead, wipe the outer ear with a clean washcloth. Do not dig into the ear canal, and never use a pointed object. Scratching the skin of the ear canal can let germs get in under the skin and cause infection.

Avoid swimming in dirty water. If you swim in a lake or stream, rinse your ears out afterward with clean water or the solution mentioned above.

Use a dry towel or hair dryer to dry your ears.

Don’t put objects in your ear canal (including cotton-tip swabs, pencils, paperclips, or fingers).

If you've recently had an ear infection or ear surgery, talk to your doctor before you go swimming.
